Box Score WORCESTER, Mass. – In another battle between nationally-ranked programs, the No. 19 Assumption University women's lacrosse team came up just short against No. 3 Adelphi by a 10-7 decision on Saturday afternoon at Brian Kelly Stadium.
Junior Jenna Joseph (Longmeadow, Mass.) gave the Greyhounds early 1-0 and 2-1 leads by finishing a pass from senior Jill Good (North Andover, Mass.) less than two minutes into the contest and also capitalizing on a free position shot. Capped by a free position marker as time expired, however, Adelphi held a slim 3-2 advantage through one quarter of play. Both teams scored twice in the second quarter, which included having Izzy Grant accounting for both Panther markers, and the visitors carried a 5-4 edge into the break.
After outshooting the Greyhounds by a 17-9 margin in the first half, Adelphi (6-0, NE10 3-0) did not allow the hosts to score in the third quarter which would prove to be the difference. Emily Beier, meanwhile, created her own shots through traffic and scored four consecutive unassisted markers to give her team a 9-4 advantage.
Assumption did not give up and attempted to rally despite trailing by five in the final frame. But after senior Lauren Jakobs (Naples, Maine) brought the Greyhounds within three by converting a free position attempt in the final minute, Adelphi won the ensuing draw and was able to run out the clock.
Beirer scored a game-high five goals to lead the way for Adelphi, which remained undefeated by outshooting the Greyhounds 30-24, having a 15-13 edge in ground balls, and won 13 draw controls. Grant registered a hat trick and won seven draws, while Alexandra Beebe, Kasey Flavin, and Christina Mccabe each picked up two ground balls and caused two turnvoers. Goalie Emma Lemanski made six stops to pick up the win.
Jakobs filled the box score again to pace Assumption with two goals, three ground balls, two caused turnovers, and one draw control. Good set up two scores, and senior Cassie Palmisano (Woburn, Mass.) anchored the defense with five ground balls and two caused turnovers. Sophomore Olivia Catanzarite (East Longmeadow, Mass.) won four draws, and senior goalie Allie Collins (Natick, Mass.) turned away 13 shots.
Assumption (3-4, NE10 1-2) will next travel to face No. 24 Stonehill for their fifth game of the season against a nationally-ranked opponent on Wednesday evening. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
