Box Score WORCESTER, Mass. – Junior Jenna Joseph (Longmeadow, Mass.) factored into six goals and won three draws in leading the No. 18 Assumption University women's lacrosse team to a dominating 18-8 victory over Franklin Pierce at Brian Kelly Stadium on Wednesday evening.
Assumption scored the opening eight goals of the game through the early stages of the second quarter and never looked back. Six different players netted the team's first six goals before senior Lauren Jakobs (Naples, Maine) finished a pass from graduate student Alison Foley (Walpole, Mass.) to give the Greyhounds a 7-0 lead through the first quarter of action.
Franklin Pierce (3-8, NE10 3-6) was finally able to get on the board when Gabrielle Oswald shot the ball through traffic at the 11:25 mark of the second quarter. Oswald set up Savannah Ernst to bring the Ravens within seven, but the hosts ended the half on a 2-0 run.
The Greyhounds, who led 12-3 at halftime, went ahead by twin figures for the first time to keep the clock running courtesy of another Jakobs strike at 13:42 before Joseph found sophomore Caoline O'Connell (Natick, Mass.) for her first collegiate goal to make it an 11-goal margin. Junior Claire Desilva (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) converted a free position attempt with the Greyhounds down a player to create a 15-4 score with less than five minutes remaining in the third, and the Ravens would never recover.
Joseph finished the game with one goal, five assists, and three draw controls to lead the way for Assumption, which outshot its opponent 29-18 and had a 17-13 advantage in draw controls. Freshman Katelynn Johnston (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) won a career-best eight draws, while sophomore Ella Tenney (Braintree, Mass.) and Jakobs finished with four goals apiece. Jakobs also scooped up a team-leading four ground balls, and senior goalie Allie Collins (Natick, Mass.) made nine saves.
Savannah Ernst and Katelyn Hadden each scored two goals apiece to pace Franklin Pierce offensively. Kaitlyn Daly won four draws, Jenna Cimbron finished with two ground balls and two caused turnovers, and goalies Megan Bacik and Erin Blake combined to turn away eight shots. Bacik was charged with the loss for allowing 14 goals in the first half.
Assumption (7-5, NE10 5-3), which has won four of its last five contests, will next visit Saint Rose on Saturday at 5 p.m.
