Box Score WORCESTER, Mass. – Playing in front of supportive alumni faithful, the No. 19 Assumption University women's lacrosse team picked up its second straight win over a Northeast-10 Conference opponent by bettering American International College, 19-10, on Saturday afternoon at Brian Kelly Stadium.
Assumption outscored the Yellow Jackets by a 5-2 margin in each of the first two quarters and never trailed in the contest. Sophomore Ella Tenney (Braintree, Mass.) netted two early goals, and junior Jenna Joseph (Longmeadow, Mass.) tallied two assists to kickstart the offense in the opening frame. Junior Claire Desilva (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) then set up two markers less than a minute apart in the second quarter, and Tenney factored into a pair of goals in the waning moments to help give the Greyhounds a comfortable 10-4 advantage at the break.
The hosts scored the first two goals of the third quarter and later embarked on a 5-0 to extend their lead to double digits and keep the clock running. Despite being outscored by a 3-2 margin in the final quarter, the Greyhounds had given themselves more than enough insurance through 45 minutes to prevail. Joseph found senior Lauren Jakobs (Naples, Maine) for the final marker with 2:20 remaining in regulation to put a stamp on the team's fifth win of the season.
Joseph factored into nine of the 18 markers by scoring three goals and assisting on six others for Assumption, which doubled its opponent up in shots and won 20 of the 33 draw controls. Olivia Catanzarite (East Longmeadow, Mass.) won five draws and registered four goals along with an assist, while Tenney netted a hat trick, senior Cassie Palmisano (Woburn, Mass.) caused two turnovers, and senior goalie Allie Collins (Natick, Mass.) made seven saves.
Antonella Mikolyuk paced American International (2-6, NE10 0-5) in the loss by finishing with three goals, one assist, and a game-high seven draw controls. Jessica Stone picked up four ground balls, and Liz Day contributed two goals, one helper, and four draw controls. Stone also made nine stops between the posts.
Assumption (5-4, NE10 3-2) next travels to face No. 20 Saint Anselm for another matchup between nationally-ranked opponents on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m.
