BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – The No. 10/18 Assumption University women's basketball team overcame a slow start in the first quarter; the Greyhounds Rallied and Raced past the University of Bridgeport 55-41 in non-conference action Monday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
In the opening early portion of the first quarter, the two teams traded baskets, but with the score tied at 4-4, the hosting Purple Knights went on an 11-0 run to go up 15-4. Marina Callahan halted the run with a three-pointer with 90 seconds remaining in the quarter to cut the deficit to eight points (15-7) after 10 minutes.
 
Assumption flipped the script in the second quarter, outscoring Bridgeport 15-4 in the frame to take a 21-20. Monica Spain and Ja'Lyn Armstrong combined to go four-for-six from the first for ten points and eight rebounds in the period.

Coming out of the break, the Greyhounds began to pull away. Halfway through the period, Marina Callahan and Armstrong scored back-to-back layups to extend the visitor's lead to six (32-24). The Assumption advantage grew to seven points (37-30) following a made Amanda Miezcowski hit a jumper with 1:24 remaining in the third quarter.
 
The Purple Knights cut the deficit down to four points (37-33) after an early three-pointer from Amani Melendez, but a quick answer from Spain kicked off an 18-8 run for the remainder of the quarter. The Greyhounds would pull away to record a 55-41 road win.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS

• Ja'Lyn Armstrong led the way for the Greyhounds with 14 points, while Marina Callahan (12) and Monica (10) registered double-digit points.
• Spain recorded her fourth double-double of the year, following a ten points, ten rebound performance.
• Bridgeport outrebounded Assumption 36-35, while the Greyhounds outscored the hosts 30-26 in the paint.
• Assumption held Bridgeport to 18-for-54 (33.3 percent) from the field, which is the lowest shooting percentage that the Purple Knights have shot since Feb. 16, 2022.
• With their 15^th win of the year, it is the most by the Greyhounds since they had 19 back in the 2016-17 campaign.
