HOW IT HAPPENED
The offense started a bit slow for both sides, as a driving layup by
Ja'Lyn Armstrong with 3:50 remaining in the first quarter forced an early timeout from the Panthers. The quarter ended with a two-point lead for the visitors, with both teams shooting 37.5 percent from the field.
The Panthers came out of the gate hard in the second quarter, as they jumped out to a three-point lead at 6:01, making the Greyhounds call a timeout.
Monica Spain was leading the way at this point with six points. Assumption's shooting started to go cold as they went on a scoreless run that spanned over five minutes of action.
Marina Callahan broke the drought with a layup at 2:04 left in the half. Callahan got another bucket towards the end of the half to cut the deficit to six, as Assumption was down 26-20 at the half.
Amanda Mieczkowski came out the gate quickly with a three and a layup to get the lead back down to one. The Greyhounds continued to push and secured a one-point lead with 3:26 to go in the second half. Led by Mieczkowski's ten, Assumption had a two-point lead, 40-38, going into the final ten minutes of action.
The fourth quarter was better offense from Assumption to try to increase their lead.
Monica Spain scored back-to-back baskets with five minutes to go to give Assumption a five-point advantage. Mieczkowski's points down the stretch helped close it out as the Panthers turned to fouling and putting Assumption at the free-throw line. Despite the rough night shooting, the Greyhounds were able to hang on for their 16th win out of 18, taking down Adelphi 57-52.
