HOW IT HAPPENED
The Greyhounds stormed out to a sizeable first quarter lead, up 17-6 in the opening seven minutes, controlling the glass and dominating in transition.
Molly Stokes started hot from beyond the arc, knocking down three triples in the early stages. Saint Anselm would close out a bit towards the end of the quarter, but the score after ten minutes was 23-13 in favor of the visitors.
Saint Anselm came out with more energy in the second quarter as they pushed to close the Assumption lead, getting as close as six.
Ja'Lyn Armstrong's steal, followed by a
Marina Callahan layup, helped halt the Hawks' momentum. The rest of the second quarter ended up being back and forth, with both sides trading buckets.
Anna Davis got up to seven points by cleaning up on the glass, getting putbacks, and sending the Greyhounds into the intermission up 36-27.
Two straight layups halfway through the third quarter saw an 11-point lead close up to seven, forcing Assumption Head Coach
Kerry Phayre to call a timeout to regroup. Following the timeout, the Greyhounds outscored the hosts 12-4, with Callahan pouring in six points and
Amanda Mieczkowski scoring four points, including a jumper right before the buzzer.
In the fourth quarter, the Hawks tried to chip away at the deficit and would narrow it down to seven points, following a Liv Robles jumper (59-52, 0:59), but the Greyhounds would hit six-of-eight free throws to give Assumption the 65-57 bounce-back win.
