WORCESTER, Mass. – The No. 18/25 Assumption University women's basketball team improved to 13-1 overall, as the Greyhounds picked up a 62-51 win over Southern Connecticut State University in Northeast-10 Conference action Saturday afternoon.

THE BASICS
Score: Assumption University 62, Southern Connecticut State University 51
Records: Greyhounds (13-1, 7-1 NE10), Owls (9-4, 4-3 NE10)

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Greyhounds got it started early, going up 12-4 in the first six minutes, forcing a timeout from the Owls. The defense continued to force turnovers in the opening quarter, only allowing the visitors to score six points. A Molly Stokes three-pointer with five seconds left gave the Greyhounds a 19-6, heading into the first quarter break.

The Owls came out with more energy in the second quarter, getting two baskets and drawing an offensive foul on Marina Callahan. Southern Connecticut got the score within five (26-21) until back-to-back Monica Spain layups helped slow down the momentum from the away team. Ja'Lyn Armstong secured a basket with the foul, followed by a Grace Leary layup with 3.2 seconds remaining. Going into the break, the Greyhounds secured another double-digit lead, up 36-23 at halftime.

The third quarter was more of a back-and-forth affair with more transition basketball from the Greyhounds as they kept their lead at a reasonable reach from the Owls. Spain continued her strong day by scoring and assisting while also controlling the glass for the Greyhounds. At the end of the quarter, the Greyhounds were up 53-35.

The first four minutes of the fourth quarter started slowly with an Owl layup in transition, forcing a timeout from Assumption Head Coach Kerry Phayre. The Owls started a short comeback to cut it to twelve (57-45) after a couple of Assumption turnovers, but a Marina Callahan left-handed layup helped slow that down. Assumption would withstand pressure from the Owls until the final buzzer, hanging on for a 62-51 victory.
