HOW IT HAPPENED
Dartmouth applied pressure to the Greyhounds directly from the opening faceoff, firing three quality shots within the game's first minute. The Big Green got on the scoreboard early with a point-blank goal from Izee Powell just over two minutes into the contest. Dartmouth would score again only 46 seconds after their opening goal, as Cally Dixon logged her first goal of the season. The game's momentum swung Assumption's way as they entered the powerplay.
Ava McGaffigan and Lily Corso each obtained excellent looks at an answer for the Hounds, although the Dartmouth defense remained impenetrable. The Greyhounds were rendered scoreless in the first period despite their eight shots on goal. Dartmouth held a 2-0 lead heading into the second period.
Â
The Hounds' defense was flawless in the second period. The Big Green attempted to increase their lead with 14 shots in the first ten minutes of the period.
Carissa Mudrak saved nine of the 14 shot attempts while the Assumption defenders blocked the other handful of shots.
Alexa Hanrahan found the back of the net with a goal amidst a four-on-four as the Greyhounds cut into Dartmouth's lead. The Hounds defense was tested again late in the period, as the Big Green were eager to answer. Dartmouth would attack with an eight-shot barrage in the final three minutes. Mudrak recorded another five saves to prevent the Big Green from scoring in the second period.
Â
Dartmouth's scoring drought came to a swift end. Jenna Donohue regained a two-score lead for the Big Green in the first 40 seconds of the final period. Assumption looked to reply in the tightly fought contest. At 5:29,
Sheridan Terrazzano diced up the Big Green defenders off an assist from
Justina Valentini as she found a quick response for the Hounds. The remainder of the period provided back-and-forth action as the Big Green sought to outlast Assumption's final efforts. In the game's closing minutes,
Alexa Hanrahan had a golden opportunity to even the score. However, Eleanor Rogers made a game-winning kick save as Dartmouth narrowly beat the Greyhounds 3-2.
