Women's Ice Hockey ties Saint Anselm, 1-1 in NEWHA debut

MANCHESTER, N.H. - Led by a 53-save performance by Marissa Mudrak, the Assumption University women's ice hockey team recorded a 3-3 tie at Saint Anselm College in their New England Women's Hockey Alliance on Friday evening.

THE BASICS:

Score: Assumption University 3, Saint Anselm College 3 - OT

Records: Greyhounds (0-3-1, 0-0-1 NEWHA), Hawks (0-4-1, 0-0-1 NEWHA)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Saint Anselm was aggressive on the offensive end, as they came out firing in the opening period, yet the Greyhounds were the first team to strike. At the 5:57 marker, Ava McGaffigan recorded the program's first-ever lead as Teagan Vaughan and Ella Rago assisted her. The Greyhounds doubled their lead with six minutes remaining in the frame, as Kiersten Browning beat the Hawks netminder to the far post. Carissa Mudrak was the best player on the ice in the opening 20 minutes, as she recorded 18 saves.

Saint Anselm would eventually get on the board halfway through the middle frame as Tyra Turner scored on the power play for the Hawks. Assumption responded on the advantage, as Rachel Agerter's wrist shot from the slot beat the host's netminder to the corner of the cage. The Hawks closed the gap to just one goal as they capitalized on the contest's second power-play score.

The Hawks would eventually tie the game at 3-3, as Gracee Donovan scored the equalizer at the 8:52 marker with a wrister from the point. Saint Anselm would have a flurry of shots in the final moments of the third period, but Mudrak would continue to stand on her head to force overtime.

Despite multiple opportunities, neither side would find the back of the net in the extra frame.
