COLCHESTER, VT - The No. 8 nationally ranked Assumption women's field hockey team survived a scare in Vermont on Wednesday evening, defeating Saint Michael's College 4-3 in overtime in Northeast-10 conference field hockey action.
THE BASICS:
Score: No. 8 Assumption University 4, Saint Michael's College 3 - OT
Records: Greyhounds (13-4, 12-0 NE10), Purple Knights (3-14, 3-9 NE10)
HOW IT HAPPENED
Assumption started quickly, with Mia Salah firing a shot that was saved just two minutes in. Greyhounds provided pressure in the area following their first corner at 11:30, but Lily Daly fired the final shot wide of the cage. Elle Murray got on the board first at 10:24, putting her shot through the legs of Courtney Watt. Saint Michael's responded less than a minute later, with Addy Fenton beating Paige Gillette. Without wasting time again, the Hounds got another lead with 8:44 remaining, with Murray getting her second. The first quarter would end with this score: Assumption up 2-1.
The second quarter was a little back and forth, with both sides searching for the next goal. Callie Beauparlant carried the ball a long way to set up a chance for Salah, but her shot was saved by Watt, who worked hard to maintain the one-goal lead. The second quarter closed without either team adding to their goal count, and the Greyhounds took a 2-1 lead into halftime.
To open the third quarter, Saint Michael's scored the only goal of the period despite being outshot. This led to a very nerve-wracking fourth quarter, which saw Lily Daly score to give Assumption an advantage 4-3, only for the Purple Knights to tie it up 32 seconds later through Morgan Cathcart. In overtime, after a long battle in the opening minutes, Daly again fired home a rebound to win the game for the Greyhounds.
