WORCESTER, Mass. – Patrick McKiernan scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner, as the Assumption University men's ice hockey team won the 2023 Woo Cup Championship following a 5-4 win over Anna Maria on Sunday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Anna Maria was the first team to strike, as Guillaume Coulombe opened the scoring at 1:34 of the first period, which Jake Lavoie quickly answered with a power play tally, with Camron Roberts and Patrick Rossetti getting the helpers on the score. Anna Maria regained the lead with Samson Mouland converting on the man-advantage at 6:55. Assumption finished the period strong, as Ronny Paragallo and Patrick McKiernan found the back of the net for the Greyhounds and put them up 3-2 after 20 minutes.
Brandon Della Paolera evened the score at 3-3, as he scored on the power play at the 6:00 marker. The game would not remain tied for long, as Jonathan Surrette put the Hounds back on top, as he scored at the 12:01 marker, with Shane Sullivan and Ronny Paragallo credited with the helpers. The AMCats tied the game in the final minute of action of the second period, as Matthew Gilbert scored an assisted score with 55.7 showing no the clock.
Halfway through the third period, Patrick McKiernan put the Greyhounds up for good, as his wrister from the point beat the Anna Maria netminder, giving Assumption a 5-4 lead. The AMCats pulled their netminder with 1:10 showing on the clock, but Assumption would weather the extra pressure and secure the 5-4 win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Thomas McLarnon logged 36 saves for his second win of the year.
- Anna Maria had a slight advantage in shots, as they outshot Assumption 40-39, while the Greyhounds won 33-of-52 of the faceoffs.
- The Greyhounds went 4-8 on the man advantage, while Anna Maria was 2-6.
- Patrick McKiernan and Jonathan Surrette were named to the All-Tournament team, while Shane Sullivan was selected as the Lance "Duke" Brady Most Outstanding Player.
