WORCESTER, Mass – The Assumption volleyball team jumped out to a 2-0 set lead but would fall in five to Bentley University on Tuesday evening at Laska Gymnasium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Bentley jumped out to a 5-2 lead, while Assumption fought back to keep the first set close. Down 13-11, the Hounds exploded on an 11-1 run to take a 21-14 lead, with multiple kills and attacking errors from the Falcons. The lead was strong enough to close out the set, with the Hounds taking it 25-20.
Bentley responded in the second set up 7-5, but once again, the Hounds played well to get a slight lead, with kills from Sophia Kane and Carly Goodhue. A Madison Lupino slam made it 16-10, while Bentley started to fight back and took an 18-17 lead. Multiple service aces by Goodhue and a kill from Alexis Distasio closed out the second set, putting Assumption one more set away from a massive upset.
Bentley stormed out into the third set, running out an 11-5 lead, which led to an Assumption timeout. Their lead grew to 16-8 as they slowly got back into the game. Despite a small fight while down 24-12, Bentley took the third set 25-14.
The Falcons started to hit their stride, getting another significant lead at 9-3 off six straight points. From then on, it was back-and-forth, giving Assumption a bit of hope of coming back, but they could not close the gap on the consistent six-point lead from the visitors. After multiple attacking errors, Bentley finally closed it out with a kill from Caitlin Wunder, leading to a fifth and final set.
With momentum on their side, Bentley ripped off four straight points at 6-5, leading 10-5 after another kill from Vitko. At 11-7, Bentley won four consecutive points to complete the five-set comeback victory 3-2.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Alexis Distasio led the way with 12 kills, while Carly Goodhue added ten.
- atiana Calderin paced the Assumption offense with 18 assists, with Sophia Noel adding 17.
- Brandi Montoya had a game-high 26 digs, while Calderin added 13.
- Bentley now leads the all-time series 43-5.
