THE BASICS

Records: Greyhounds (4-1-0, 2-1-0 NE10) | Hawks (1-4-1, 1-2-1 NE10)
HOW IT HAPPENED
The first period between the Greyhounds and Hawks was back-and-forth from the faceoff. The defense was the story of this period, as each side refused to give up the opening goal.
Thomas McLarnon saved 14 of the 18 shots attempted by the Hawks. Meanwhile, Cam Caroll saved 17 of the 22 shots attempted by the Hounds. Neither side gave up a golden opportunity as the defenses quickly closed out on all shot attempts, with each goalie making textbook saves against on-goal attempts. Assumption applied more pressure with their onslaught of shot attempts and faceoff wins. However, neither side conceded a score in the first period.
Assumption froze Saint Anselm as they opened the scoring early in the second period. In the opening few minutes, the action remained the same as the first period. However, in the fourth minute of the second period,
Camron Roberts led the golden opportunity for the Greyhounds. Roberts passed to
Jonathan Surrette, who blew by the Hawks' defense. Surrette drew the goalie to the left and flicked the puck to the top right of the goal with the outside of his stick for a fancy finish. Saint Anselm, desperate to score, began taking a plethora of shots from a distance, although McLarnon and the Hounds' defense remained perfect. The Greyhounds held the Hawks scoreless for another period, taking a one-score lead into the final 20 minutes.
A physical third period saw the Hawks quickly flipping this game on the Greyhounds' head. After a brief scuffle between the teams, Alec Grace went forehand to backhand to bury the puck in the back of the net, providing Saint Anselm with the equalizer. Seven minutes later, Tommy Schwartz would have a similar goal. This time, going backhand to forehand, completing the comeback for the Hawks, as they took a 2-1 lead on the Greyhounds. It appeared that the Hawks would cruise their way to a comeback victory; however, the Hounds would not quit. With just under two minutes remaining,
Leo Piandes received a pass from
Ronny Paragallo, as Piandes snuck a shot behind the Hawks' goalie.
In overtime, the Hawks attempted to score quickly; however, McLarnon made two of his best saves of the evening, keeping the hopes of the Greyhounds alive. Eventually, the Greyhounds had a counterattack led by
Ryan Decker and
Jake Lavoie.
John Woernle received the pass and was left in a one-on-one with the goalie. Woernle converted and propelled Assumption to a 3-2 overtime victory.
