EAST MEADOW, N.Y. – The Assumption University women's ice hockey fell to the New England Women's Hockey Alliance defending champions, Long Island University, 3-1 on Friday afternoon at the Northwell Health Ice Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Assumption was the team on the attack in the early portion of the first period, as they outshot the defending NEWHA champions 4-1 in the opening five minutes. LIU got on the board at the 12:32 marker as Jeannie Wallner put the loose puck in the back of the net. In the opening 20 minutes, Long Island outshot the Greyhounds 13-8.
After five minutes of no stoppages to begin the second period, the Sharks doubled their lead, as Mikayla Lantto scored on a 3-on-1 opportunity, making it 2-0 at 6:12. The Greyhounds would have a great chance in the tail end of the middle period, as they had a 5-on-3 advantage in the final two minutes. Still, they were unable to beat Tindra Holm in the crease.
LIU pushed their lead to 3-0 early into the third period as Milana Burera scored her first collegiate goal, pushing the loose puck in front of Carissa Mudrak. Alexa Hanrahan got the Greyhounds on the board halfway through the third period, as her wrister beat Holm to the top glove side.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Carissa Mudrak recorded 23 saves for the Greyhounds.
- Assumption outshot the Sharks 33-27, while both sides had 27 faceoff wins.
- Neither team would score on the power play, as Assumption was 0-3 and Long Island was 0-2.
- LIU now leads the all-time series, 1-0-0
