th win of the season, as they picked up a 60-44 win against the University of New Haven Saturday afternoon at Laska Gymnasium.
THE BASICS
Score: No. 13/18 Assumption University 60, University of New Haven 44
Records: Greyhounds (20-4, 13-4 NE10), Chargers 15-8, 11-7 NE10)
HOW IT HAPPENED
It was a slow start for both sides, as a pair of
Amanda Mieczkowski free throws at the 7:50 mark were the first points on the day. The defense was immense from the start, as the Chargers only had two points by Assumption's first timeout with 5:33 remaining in the first. A
Molly Stokes three brought a bit of life to an otherwise low-scoring quarter, as the Greyhounds led 15-6 at the stoppage.
Stokes started the 2nd the same way she ended it, knocking down a three-pointer. The transition offense and lockdown defense continued in the second half as the home team grew their lead up to 26-12 following a
Ja'Lyn Armstrong transition layup. New Haven struggled to get any offense going, as they shot the ball 28.0 percent from the field and 20.0 percent from beyond the arc. Stokes led the way into the break, dropping 14 points on 5-7 shooting from the field, as the Greyhounds took a 31-17 lead into halftime.
The Chargers came out much more aggressive in the second half, already cutting into the lead and getting it down to nine and forcing an Assumption timeout. Back-to-back
Monica Spain layups gave Assumption more breathing room as the home team continued to hold the lead and pushed it to 13 at the three-minute mark of the period. A buzzer-beating three attempt by Mieczkowski would rim out and keep the lead at 13 going into the fourth.
The lead grew up to 19 again after some more buckets from Spain and a pair of free throws. New Haven was being held to 31.9 percent from the field and could not get any easy buckets. Assumption was closing in on the victory with 2:34 left and a 21-point lead. Despite efforts until the end, the Greyhounds held on for their 20th win, 60-44.
