Men's Ice Hockey's Comeback Comes Up Short in NE10 Semifinals

BURLINGTON, VT. – The Assumption University men's ice hockey team allowed five goals in the second period, as they fell in the Northeast-10 Conference Semifinals at Saint Michael's College, 7-3 Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Assumption controlled the majority of the action in the first period as they outshot the hosts 15-10 while also winning 15-of-21 faceoffs. The Greyhounds would eventually get on the board first, as Jimmy McDermott redirected the shot from the point by Sean Corliss.
 
After the first half of the second period, which was dominated by the goaltenders, Saint Michael's would knot up the contest as Quinn McCarthy was able to roof a close-angle shot, beating Benedict over the shoulder. The Purple Knights took their first lead of the game with under seven minutes remaining in the middle frame as Ryland Dukes beat the Greyhounds' netminder over the blocker shoulder. Three minutes later, the floodgates began to break, as David Ciancio put the hosts up 3-1 before Case Kangias made it 4-1 13 seconds later. In the final minute of the middle frame, ad Matt Schreiner scored with 22.8 showing on the clock.
 
Down four goals entering the third period, the Greyhounds came out on the attack. William Smith got Assumption within three, just past the five-minute mark. John Woernle snuck in a wrist shot from the point to draw the Blue and White within two (5-3, 10:53). Down two goals with 2:28 showing on the game clock, Head Coach Michael Looney pulled the goalie trying to complete the comeback, but Saint Michael's would score two empty net goals to secure a 7-3 final score.

 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Drew Benedict and Thomas McLarnon combined to record 32 saves in the crease for Assumption. 
  • Saint Michael's outshot their opposition 39-37, while the Greyhounds won 49-of-75 faceoffs.
  • Assumption went 1-for-2 on the man advantage, while SMC was 0-for-2.
