Baseball Drops Pair vs. Southern New Hampshire

WORCESTER, Mass. – For the second time in three days, the Assumption University Greyhounds baseball team dropped both ends of a Northeast-10 doubleheader against Southern New Hampshire University at H.L. Rocheleau '24 Field.

THE BASICS
Game One Score: Southern New Hampshire University 6, Assumption University 4
Game Two Score: Southern New Hampshire University 7, Assumption University 2
Records: Greyhounds (9-21, 4-8 NE10), Penmen (23-8, 12-0 NE10)

HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME ONE - Southern New Hampshire 6, Assumption 4
Southern New Hampshire wasted no time getting ahead again, as they blasted a lead-off homerun to go up 1-0 to begin the game. Owen Podelec tried to respond right away in the bottom of the first with a triple but got caught in a rundown, and the Greyhounds couldn't capitalize. The Penmen got another in the top of the second, taking advantage of an Assumption error. Through four, both pitchers were in decent control of the game, as the lead remained at 2-0 for Southern New Hampshire with both starting pitchers still on the mound. The Penmen grabbed another with a single up the middle as the game headed to the sixth inning with the visitors up 3-0. Assumption got on the board in the sixth, with Jared Beradino crushing a solo home run to left field to cut the deficit to two. Before the Greyhounds could bat again, SNHU took advantage of the Assumption bullpen by adding three runs in the top of the seventh. The Greyhounds almost pulled off the comeback, with Christopher Rabias pulling off a bases-clearing double to score three runs, but the Penmen settled in and secured the final three outs, taking game one 6-4.

GAME TWO – Southern New Hampshire 7, Assumption 2
It didn't take long for the Penmen to get an early lead again, as they grabbed one run in the top of the second. They hit on Kyle Keating again in the third inning, accumulating two more runs before Beradino ended their scoring run with a double play. The game picked up at a decent pace in the next couple of innings until Keating faced some trouble again in the top of the fifth, as Southern New Hampshire took a 4-0 lead. The Penmen's pitching was commanding through five innings, as they only allowed one Greyhound hit. Assumption managed to get on the board in the bottom of the seventh, as Connor Wironen hit a sac fly to score Cole Durkin, but the Penmen got out of it without giving up any more runs. Once again, Assumption threatened at the plate with runners on, but the Penmen defense fielded exceptionally well to get out of the jam as the game headed to the ninth. To start the bottom of the ninth, Durkin smoked a ball over the right field fence for a solo home run shot. That was all Assumption had for a rally, and the Penmen hung on to win game two 7-2 and take both games on the day.
