HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME ONE – Assumption University 3, Pace University 0
The pitchers started in control in game one, with
Griffin O'Connor picking off a runner at first base to end the top half of the second inning. Assumption would work bases loaded in the third inning, but Jared Beradino struck out on four pitches, leaving a great chance on the table for the Hounds. Through three, both teams only had two hits.
The Hounds got on the board in the bottom of the fourth when
Cole Durkan's triple started things off, and
Jack Barry got him in with an RBI double.
Kevin Cox kept it going with a double of his own, scoring Barry and putting Assumption up 2-0. They worked multiple walks in the bottom of the fifth again to load the bases with only one out, and
Emilio Acosta was able to work a walk and get one run in to go up 3-0 through five.
In the seventh inning, Assumption was holding a three-run lead, which was more than enough, as they prevailed to win 3-0 in game one.
Griffin O'Connor went the full seven on the mound for the Hounds, allowing just three hits and 0 runs. He also struck out five batters on 83 pitches.
GAME TWO – Pace University 6, Assumption University 4
Assumption started game two right where they left off, with Jared Beradino crushing a two-run homerun in the first to give the Hounds a 2-0 lead. They worked the bases loaded in the bottom of the second, but the Setters did well and got out of the jam without giving up any more runs.
Pace's bats finally woke up in the third, grabbing three runs when the bases were loaded to take a 3-2 lead. The Setters worked the bases loaded again in the fourth and got one run through an error from
Jake Hamel at shortstop; however,
John Davis got a strikeout to stop the damage there.
Cole Durkan tripled into the centerfield gap, and
Jack Barry got him in on a sacrifice fly, which cut the deficit to 4-3 as we headed into the sixth inning.
Pace expanded their lead with back-to-back singles in the sixth inning to go up 6-3 and force another pitching change out of Assumption.
Kevin Cox tried to get things going for the Hounds by smacking a home run on the first pitch he saw in the sixth inning, but that's all Assumption could get in that attempt. Despite good pitching the rest of the way, the Setters were able to see it out and split the series, taking Game Two 6-4.
