No. 19/23 Football falls to No. 4/7 Grand Valley State in the Brian Kelly Bowl

ALLENDALE, Mich. – No. 19/23 Assumption University football team fell to No. 4/7 Grand Valley State University in the Brian Kelly Bowl XX-XX Saturday afternoon at Lubbers Stadium. 

THE BASICS

Score: No. 4/7 Grand Valley State University 43, No. 19/23 Assumption University 7

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Lakers were the first team to strike as a touch pass from Cade Peterson to Kellen Reed went 67 yards to the house. After a quick three and out by the Greyhounds' offense, the Hounds got the ball back as Tyler Royall recovered a fumble on the punt return. The two defenses settled in quickly, as both teams were held scoreless for the remainder of the opening quarter. 

After a 31-yard punt return from Darrell Johnson to the 27-yard line, the Assumption defense stiffened up and forced a 21-yard field goal by Grand Valley. The Assumption defense forced another turnover, as Roderick Boyd picked off a pass from the Lakers' signal-caller inside the red zone and returned it to the GVSU 44. During the ensuing drive for the Greyhounds, they got into the Lakers' side of the field before stiffing up and forcing a punt, which landed inside the 10-yard line. Grand Valley State would extend their lead to 17-0 with 12 seconds remaining in the first half, as Johnson scored a four-yard swing pass for a score. GVSU would head into halftime leading 17-0 while outgaining the Greyhounds 277-79. 

After the Greyhounds went for it on fourth down at midfield, on the opening drive, the Lakers extended their lead to 23-0 after the GVSU quarterback ran 20 yards up the middle for a score, but the ensuing extra-point attempt was blocked, but the Greyhounds defense. Assumption responded with an 11-yard touchdown pass to Keith Mancini, making it 23-7. The hosts closed out the third quarter with a one-yard touchdown run. 

In the fourth quarter, the Lakers went down the field and scored their third rushing touchdown before having their second extra point blocked on the afternoon. Grand Valley once again capitalized on an Assumption turnover; GVSU went down and pushed their lead to 43-7 with a one-yard touchdown run. The clock would run out on the Greyhounds as they drove the field on the final possession and would fall 43-7. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Jake Cady went 22-for-34 passing with one touchdown. 
  • James Henderson led the way for the Greyhounds on the ground, having five carries for 31 yards. 
  • Bailey Collier hauled in eight receptions for 49 yards, while Keith Mancini had four for 27 yards and a score. 
  • Dion Kuinlan recorded ten tackles, while Owen Fitzgerald had nine with two tackles for a loss. 
  • This was the first-ever Brian Kelly Bowl. Coach Kelly graduated from Assumption in 1983 before heading to GVSU, where he won two national championships (2002, 2003). 
  • Grand Valley State now leads the all-time series 1-0.
