Men's Ice Hockey first-period explosion leads to a 5-1 win vs. SNHU

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Assumption University men's ice hockey team struck for three first-period goals, which led to a 5-1 Northeast-10 conference win against Southern New Hampshire University Friday evening at the Worcester Ice Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Assumption started fast as Ronny Paragallo struck at the 4:20 mark of the opening period. The Penmen tied the game at 12:33 as Kurt Watson beat the Greyhounds' netminder. The hosts closed out the first period strong, as Ryan Decker and Jimmy McDermott scored back-to-back goals within 43 seconds to go up 3-1.
 
The Greyhounds pushed their lead to 4-1, five minutes into the middle frame, as Jonathan Surrette scored on a 5-on-3 power play. In the third period, Nathan Palumbo tacked on a fifth goal for Assumption to push the final score to 5-1.
 
 INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Thomas McLarnon made 34 saves in the crease for the hosts.
  • Assumption outshot SNHU 46-35, while the visitors had a slight edge in the faceoff circles (35-of-69).
    The Greyhounds went 1-for-5 on the powerplay, while the Penmen went scoreless in nine chances.
  • John Woernle (0-2), Jonathan Surrette (1-1), and Patrick Rossetti (0-2) were the only ones to record more than one point in the contest.
  • SNHU still has a slight lead in the all-time series, 39-38-2.
