Special Teams Shine in Football's 19-14 Homecoming Win over New Haven

WORCESTER, Mass.— The Assumption University football team forced three turnovers and capitalized on special teams as the Greyhounds upended the University of New Haven 19-14 in a vital Northeast-10 Conference win at Brian Kelly '83 Stadium Saturday afternoon.

THE BASICS:
Score: Assumption University 19, University of New Haven 14
Records: Greyhounds (5-2, 4-1 NE10), Chargers (5-2, 4-1 NE10)

HOW IT HAPPENED
A quiet and scoreless first quarter came and went. The final play in the quarter was a 42-yard reception for the Charger's Mikey Cainse, putting New Haven on Assumption's eight-yard line. On the second play of the second quarter, New Haven QB Daelen Menard would sneak in on a quarterback option to take the early lead. On the very next play, the lead would vanish.

Jason Wonodi received the kickoff on the 11-yard line for the Hounds and took it back 89 yards for a touchdown as fast as he could. Massimo Sgambati completed the PAT to tie the game at 7-7. Following a Tyler Royall interception, Sgambati would make a 39-yard field goal for Assumption to take a 10-7 heading into halftime.

On the opening play of New Haven's next drive, Jaron Wilson picked off a pass, which was hurried thanks to defensive end Owen Fitzgerald. The Greyhound kicker had an outstanding performance, going 4-5 on his field goal attempts, which included a career-long 48-yard blast that extended the Hound's lead to 16-7 on the same drive. Another one off the laces of Sgambati early in the fourth quarter made it a 19-7 game.

Late in the fourth, in the red zone, the Chargers made it a ballgame with a similar quarterback run as before. Menard rushed in his second touchdown to make it 19-14 with five minutes to play. Assumptions would be stopped on their next drive, and they would be forced to punt. Gabriel Bertolazzo booted one 50 yards downfield, where it bounced and contacted the New Haven returner. Jason Wonodi recovered the loose ball, regaining control of the Greyhounds and securing the victory.
