Football Stunned in Final Seconds, Falling to American International 27-24

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.— The Assumption University football fell to American International College 27-24, in Northeast-10 Conference action on Friday evening, as the Yellow Jackets scored a touchdown in the final 15 seconds to secure the game. 

THE BASICS:
Score: American International College 27, Assumption University 24
Records: Greyhounds (5-3, 4-2 NE10), Yellow Jackets (3-6, 2-4 NE10)

HOW IT HAPPENED: 
Massimo Sgambait led off the scoring with a 37-yard field goal on Assumption's first drive. AIC pushed back with a 63-yard drive for a touchdown and completed a two-point conversion to lead 8-3 after the first quarter. 

On AIC's first play of the second quarter, Tyler Royall made an interception and returned it 47 yards for the score and a 10-8 Greyhound lead. The Hounds showed their power on the next drive, trudging 71 yards downfield until Kameron Robbins broke through the goal-line defense to put Assumption up 17-8.

In the third quarter, the Yellow Jackets rallied back with a 38-yard rushing touchdown by Sidiki Kone. The Greyhound lead was cut to 17-14. The Hounds unraveled when David Eppinger blocked their 38-yard field goal attempt on the ensuing drive and returned 65 yards for a game-changing touchdown. After the extra point, it was 21-17 AIC. 

In the fourth quarter, Jay Kastantin and Quinn Sieger were linked on a 10-yard touchdown pass to regain a 24-21 Assumption lead. The Greyhound defense fought off two Yellow Jacket drives in 3-and-out fashion. However, on their final drive, AIC darted up the field, attacking through the air beginning at their ten-yard line. With 15 seconds left, Yellow Jacket quarterback Connor Dietz hit Fatir Bell over the middle for a 31-yard touchdown, sealing the game.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Assumption had 22 first downs compared to 15 for AIC.
  • The Greyhounds generated 330 total offensive yards, 292 for the Yellow Jackets.
  • Possession was led by Assumption, 35:34 - 24:26.
  • AIC leads the all-time series 16-11.
