New Haven, Conn. – Assumption University improved to 3-1 on the season with a 35-28 win over Southern Connecticut State at Jess Dow Field on Saturday afternoon. The Greyhounds secured the victory thanks to a fourth-quarter touchdown from
Jamar Ballard Jr., capping off a tightly contested matchup.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Assumption opened the scoring with an 18-yard touchdown run by
Kameron Robbins early in the first quarter, but SCSU responded with a touchdown of their own to tie it up.
The second quarter featured a flurry of scoring, with
Cameron Reagan hauling in a 26-yard touchdown pass from
Jay Kastantin to put Assumption ahead, only for the Owls to tie it again on a nine-yard run from E'lijah Gray. Kastantin added a one-yard rushing touchdown with two minutes to go before halftime, but the Owls answered with a late touchdown pass to send the teams to the locker room tied at 21.
Assumption seized momentum in the third quarter when
Shakeer McPherson returned a blocked field goal 86 yards for a score. Southern Connecticut tied the game again with a short touchdown run, but Ballard's 16-yard rush to the house late in the fourth sealed the win for the Greyhounds.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Robbins rushed for 66 yards and one touchdown on 12 carries.
- Kastantin completed 9 of 13 passes for 126 yards and one touchdown.
- McPherson's 86-yard blocked field goal return was the game's essential defensive play and the second special teams return TD of his career.
- The Hounds rushing attack totaled 178 yards on the ground.
- Dion Kuinlan led the Greyhounds with 13 tackles. Tyler Royall was next in support with eight tackles.
- With the win, Assumption evened the all-time series against Southern Connecticut at 12-12.
