PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y.—The Assumption University football team scored two first-half touchdowns and showed off a suffocating defense to win a low-scoring game on the road over Pace University to keep control of a top-three spot in the Northeast-10 Conference standings.
THE BASICS:
Score: Assumption University 14, Pace University 7
Records: Greyhounds (6-3, 5-2 NE10), Setters (2-7, 2-5 NE10)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
In the first quarter, on the Greyhound's opening drive, running back
Kameron Robbins got loose on the left side of the field and cut up 67 yards of turf for the opening touchdown. Both defenses held firm until 8:55 in the second quarter.
Quinn Sieger returned a Pace punt for 32 yards and put Assumption in scoring territory, 12 yards from the endzone. On the first play,
Jay Kastantin fired a pass over the middle out of the shotgun, connecting with Sieger for the Greyhound's second touchdown.
On the final full drive before halftime, the Setters strung together 11 plays for 55 yards, culminating in an 8-yard power run up the middle by Aidan Kennedy to make it 14-7 Assumption.
The spotlight shined on the Greyhounds defense in the second half, and they kept the score right were it was.
Owen Fitzgerald had a monster game on the defensive to help the Hounds to victory. Fitzgerald made 13 total tackles, forced a fumble, and added a pair of sacks.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Dion Kuinlan led Assumption's defense with five solo tackles.
- Tindell Frick recovered the fumble forced by Fitzgerald, and also recorded eight assisted tackles.
- Kastantin completed 16-26 passes for 125 yards and one touchdown, all without being intercepted.
- Robbins rushed for 127 yards on 18 attempts, averaging 7.1 yards per carry.
- The game's longest pass was from Kastantin to Nick Ofodile for 29 yards.
