WORCESTER, Mass.—Wednesday evening, the No. 15/12 nationally ranked Assumption University women's basketball team scrapped their way to a 49-48 overtime Northeast-10 Conference win over Franklin Pierce University in a defensive battle at Laska Gymnasium.
THE BASICS:
Score: Assumption University 49, Franklin Pierce University 48
Records: Greyhounds (5-0, 1-0 NE10), Ravens (1-5, 0-2 NE10)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Each team had their struggles in the first half. The Ravens scored only five points in the opening quarter and held the Greyhounds to six points in the second quarter. At halftime, Franklin Pierce had a one-point lead, 20-19. Baskets were just as hard to come by in the second half. Fast forward to the final moments of regulation, Assumption trailed 40-38 with 47 seconds left.
Molly Stokes drove the basket and made a game-tying layup to send the game to overtime.
The Ravens held a 48-45 lead with 18 seconds on the clock after a made free throw.
Antonia Panayides found Stokes open for a game-tying three in a three-second flash. Stokes nailed it. A last-second foul onto
Kaijhe Hall put the ball in her hands at the free throw line to decide the game. Hall went through her free-throw routine, drained the bucket, and the Greyhounds won.
BY THE NUMBERS:
- Stokes scored a game-high 15 points.
- Hall scored 12 and recorded 12 rebounds for the double-double.
- The Ravens outrebounded the Greyhounds 43-37, with the entire difference coming in offensive rebounds 11-5.
- There were 12 lead changes throughout the game and nine points where it was tied.
- Assumption began the game with an 11-0 lead.
- The Hounds lead the all-time series against FPU 31-17.
