WORCESTER, Mass.—
Molly Stokes became the 25
th member in Assumption University women's basketball program history to reach 1,000 points, doing so Saturday afternoon in the Greyhounds' 56-50 loss to Holy Family University.
THE BASICS:
Score: Holy Family University 56, Assumption University 50
Records: Greyhounds (5-1, 1-0 NE10), Tigers (6-0, 0-0 CACC)
HOW IT HAPPENED: The Greyhounds and Tigers played a chippy and balanced first quarter, tied 12-12 at intermission. In the second quarter, things slowed down as defensive adjustments paid off. Assumption scored just five points in the second quarter and headed into the half trailing 21-17. The Greyhounds battled back with an offensive surge in the third, outscoring the Tigers 18-16. It wouldn't be enough, as Holy Family poured in 19 in the fourth quarter to keep Assumption from closing the gap.
In the final moments of the game, with the score just out of reach for the possible win, the Hounds shifted their sights to a smaller victory.
Molly Stokes was sitting at 998 career points, and with under 30 seconds on the clock, the Greyhounds needed her to get the rock. After a missed three-pointer, Stokes went hunting after the milestone in the paint and was fouled on a layup. From the charity stripe, the Worcester native drained both free throws to join the exclusive 1,000th-point club as its 25
th member.
