Stokes to Callahan Lifts No. 20/RV Women's Basketball Past New Haven

WORCESTER, Mass.—Molly Stokes found Marina Callahan with 1.8 seconds remaining in regulation to lift the No. 20/RV Assumption University women's basketball team past the University of New Haven, 54-52 in a battle of two unbeaten Northeast-10 Conference teams Tuesday evening in Laska Gymnasium.

HOW IT HAPPENED: 
After a flurry of traveling calls in the first quarter, Marina Callahan recorded the first basketball of the contest at 7:42 before the two teams traded baskets throughout the frame, with Avah Ingalls hitting a corner three to close out the opening frame with Assumption up 14-12. 
 
The Greyhounds opened up the second quarter with Emma Dahl hitting her first three-pointer of the contest and Kaijhe Hall converting on a layup in the paint, giving the hosts their largest lead of the first half, 19-12. The Chargers slowly closed the gap before Sabrina Ahayeva connected from long range, regaining the lead for New Haven with 2:16 remaining in the half. The two teams would trade baskets down the stretch, as the two teams would head into halftime tied at 26-26. 
 
The two teams continued to trade baskets in the second half, as the Chargers saw their largest lead of the game coming with 3:57 remaining in the third, as they supported a five-point advantage (32-29). In the fourth, the guests had a three-point lead with 4:28 left in regulation, but Molly Stokes tied the game at 50-50 with a corner three before hitting a pair from the line, tying the game again at 52-52. UNH missed a floating jump shot in the lane with 4.0 seconds left, but after, Hall corralled a rebound with 3.4 showing on the game clock. After a timeout, Stokes inbounded the ball to a cutting Callahan in the lane, giving the Hounds the 54-52 win. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Emma Dahl led the Greyhounds with 12 points, while Molly Stokes added 11. 
  • The Hounds outrebounded the Chargers 30-28, led by Hall with a game-high 11 boards. 
  • Assumption leads the all-time series 21-9.
