WORCESTER, Mass.— The Assumption University men's ice hockey team surrendered three goals in the third period, falling to Johnson & Wales University (R.I.) 5-3 in non-conference action on Saturday evening at the Worcester Ice Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Assumption was the first to score, as
Thomas McGaffigan put the Greyhounds on the board at 8:15. Johnson & Wales tied the game three minutes later as Noah LaFleur found the back of the net. The Wildcats opened the second period with Bret Beale giving the guests their first lead of the evening, but ten minutes later, McGaffigan struck again, tying the game at two.
The game flipped on its head in the third period. After LaFleur potted his second goal, the Hounds were assessed a five-minute major. JWU doubled their lead while on the advantage, but
Sean Corliss cut the deficit to one goal (4-3) while short-handed. Luke Gaffney added an insurance goal in the final two minutes, scoring a full-ice empty-net goal, securing a 5-3 win for Johnson & Wales.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Callum Welch recorded 34 saves for his first collegiate loss as he was 9-0-0 in his career going into the game.
- Assumption outshot Johnson & Wales 43-39, while also winning 39-of-73 faceoffs.
- The Wildcats went 1-for-4 on the powerplay, while the Greyhounds were 0-of-1 on their man-advantage. The Hounds also scored short-handed.
- Johnson & Wales now leads the all-time series 15-4-3.
