WORCESTER, Mass. – The Assumption University men's ice hockey team began their Northeast-10 Conference title defense with a 4-1 win over Southern New Hampshire Friday evening at the Worcester Ice Center.
THE BASICS:

HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Greyhounds were the first team to strike, as
Dean Simeone scored at the halfway mark of the opening frame.
Shane McElhaney and
Kyle LoNigro used cross-ice stretch passes to find Simeone, who used a wrist shot to beat the Penmen netminder. Southern New Hampshire tied the game three minutes later, and Kurt Watson scored with a loose puck in the crease.
Sean Donoghue regained the lead for Assumption eight minutes into the second period as he redirected in the cross-crease pass by
Luke Evers. Four minutes later,
Ryan Decker doubled the Hounds' lead as he corralled the shot off the boards from
Patrick McKiernan and snuck it past the near post. McKiernan capped off the game with a full ice shot.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Callum Welch recorded 16 saves in the win.
- Assumption outshot Southern New Hampshire 37-17, while the Penmen won the battle in the faceoff circle, 42-of-82.
- The Greyhounds were the only team to score on the man advantage, going 1-for-3, while SNHU went 0-of-3.
- Assumption leads the all-time series 41-40-5
