No. 22/RV Women's Basketball Suffers Buzzer Beating Loss at Saint Michael's

COLCHESTER, VT.—No. 22/RV Assumption University women's basketball team dropped their first Northeast-10 Conference contest of the year, as the Saint Michael's College defeated the Greyhounds on a buzzer-beating putback shot, giving the Purple Knights a 63-61 win.

THE BASICS:

HOW IT HAPPENED: 
Assumption started strong, as they shot 50.0 percent in the first quarter while holding Saint Michael's to a 38.5 percent clip and led 16-12 after the opening frame. The Greyhounds continued their hot shooting as they connected on three of four from deep but used seven second-chance points to head into the break down five (34-29). 
 
In the third quarter, the Greyhounds' shooting cooled off, as the Purple Knights continued to shoot in the low 40s and would take their first lead of the contest with 12 seconds remaining in the quarter, as Jayla Tyler made a layup, putting the hosts up 47-46. Neither team could pull away in the fourth quarter as they traded baskets. After a layup by Bella Franchi with 5:39 showing on the clock, putting SMC up 54-51, Assumption went on a 10-2 run, with Molly Stokes and Marina Callahan combining to go 5-for-5 from the floor, putting the Greyhounds up 61-56. Saint Michael's closed the game on a 7-0 capped off by a Tyler putback rebound as time expired. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Molly Stokes scored 27 points, while Marina Callahan scored 12 points. 
  • Kaijhe Hall stuffed the stat sheet with six points, five rebounds, two steals, and two blocks. 
  • Saint Michael's outrebounded Assumption 34-26 while also outscoring the Greyhounds 19-4 in second-chance points. 
  • Assumption leads the all-time series, 42-13.
