No. 20/21 Women's Basketball's strong fourth powers Greyhounds to a 70-62 win at AIC

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The No. 20/21 nationally-ranked Assumption University women's basketball team used a fourth-quarter push to extend their winning streak to ten games following a 70-62 win at American International College Wednesday evening.

Records: Greyhounds (18-3, 13-3 NE10), Yellow Jackets (12-10, 7-9 NE10)

HOW IT HAPPENED

It was a strong start for the home side, as they jumped out to a 12-6 lead through Briana Lee scoring on a fast break layup, leading to a Hounds timeout as they struggled initially to shoot. Despite leading by as much as eight, Assumption got it down to two by the end of the quarter, with Emma Dahl nailing a three and Amanda Mieczkowski converting on a jumper. After one, Assumption led 18-16. The Yellow Jackets again opened the quarter on a run, opening the game 25-16. Molly Stokes and Marina Callahan got going towards halftime, as the Hounds trailed 31-30 at the break.

The second half was time for the Greyhounds to go on a run, going up 40-33 through Kaijhe Hall with the jumper. The Yellow Jackets stayed in it, as it was a one-point game going into the fourth. Callahan nailed a three with 21 seconds left, while Kayla Robinson responded with a three of her own. Going into the 4th, Assumption was up 49-48. Assumption opened on a 14-2 run, breaking the game open, utilizing their length in Callahan and Hall. The lead continued to increase, too much for the Yellow Jackets to overcome. Led by Callahan with 19, the Hounds defeated the Yellow Jackets 70-62. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Marina Callahan led the Greyhounds with 19 points, adding eight rebounds, three assists, and two steals. 
  • Molly Stokes continued her hot shooting from deep, pouring in 18 points on 4-for-6 long-range shooting. 
  • Assumption outrebounded AIC 32-28, while the Greyhounds shot 51.8 percent from the floor to 43.3 percent from the Yellow Jackets. 
  • Assumption is 38-22 all-time against American International.
