HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME ONE – Assumption University 11, Queens College 4
It took either side four innings to get started, but in the fourth, Assumption took a 1-0 lead as
Jamison Howland scored in
Enger Paulino. The Knights responded in the same inning to tie things up at one apiece. In the fifth, the Greyhounds tacked on four more through a pair of singles and doubles to lead 5-3 after Queens scored two more of their own with back-to-back singles.
Approaching the eighth inning, Assumption's lead was just one after the Knights had responded with a double to center field, scoring a runner to make it 5-4.
Matthew Holbrook stepped up and hit a two-run home run, followed by three more runs between Howland,
Max Lefrancois, and
Christopher Rabias to extend Assumption's lead to 10-4. For good measure, the Hounds would tack on one more in the ninth, as
Jack Barry's single advanced every runner with the bases loaded, and Lefrancois touched home once again. The Hounds took game one, 11-4.
Griffin O'Connor pitched 5.0 innings, allowing six hits and three runs and striking out four, to earn his first win of the year.
GAME TWO – Queens College 3, Assumption University 2
Assumption was the first team to strike, as
Matthew Holbrook singled through the right side of the infield in the top of the second inning to make the score 1-0.
Jack Barry doubled their lead in the fifth inning with an RBI base knock through the left side of the infield.
Kyle Keating was dealing for Assumption on the mound, as he didn't allow a base runner until the fifth inning.
Queens got on the board, scoring a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at 2-2. The game remained 2-2 until the bottom of the ninth inning when Leo Alvarez scored Elquin Rodriguez with a sacrifice fly to right field.
Keating pitched 5.2 innings, striking out six while allowing just two hits. In relief,
Justin Plausky pitched 3.0 innings, allowing just one hit and striking out two.
