Baseball rally cut short in both games vs. Adelphi

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Assumption University baseball team rallies in both games came up short, as the Greyhounds dropped both ends of their doubleheader against Adelphi University Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action.

HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME ONE – Adelphi University 11, Assumption University 7
Assumption was the first team to strike in game one, as Jack Barry doubled down the left field line to score Owen Podolec. Adelphi answered at the top of the second as they plated a pair of runs. The Panthers extended their lead with one run in the fourth, two in the fifth, three in the seventh, and three more in the ninth to go up 11-1. 
 
The Greyhounds would not go quietly in the bottom of the ninth, as Cody Smith had a two-RBI double to center, before Barry had a two-RBI double to right field. Matthew Holbrook doubled home Barry with his shot to center before Christopher Manzo plated Christopher Rabias on a sacrifice fly. Assumption would not get the game-tying run to the plate, as they would strand runners on the corners and would fall 11-7 in game one.

GAME TWO – Adelphi University 10, Assumption University 9, 
Adelphi was the first team to score in game two. They raced out to an early 7-0 lead, plating three runs in the second and four in the third. Assumption got on the board at the bottom of the third, as Chris Klein hit a solo home run to the right field. 
 
The Panthers added one run in the top of the fourth before the Greyhounds had a six-run bottom of the inning. Manzo had an RBI double to left before Klein drew a bases-loaded walk. Cody Smith capped off the inning with a grand slam to get the hosts within one (8-7). 
 
In the top of the fifth, the Panthers added two insurance runs in the top of the fifth, but the Greyhounds responded in the bottom of the sixth, as Rabias doubled home Barry and Klein to get back with one (10-9). In the bottom of the ninth, Assumption would get a runner to third base, but they could not get the run across.
