Baseball takes two at Southern Connecticut

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Assumption University baseball team used strong pitching and timely hitting to pick up a sweep of Southern Connecticut State University in Northeast-10 Conference action Sunday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME ONE – Assumption University 3, Southern Connecticut State University 0
Assumption got on the board in the top of the first inning, as Christopher Rabias drove in Chris Klein with a single to right field. Griffin O'Connor was dealing on the mound for the Greyhounds, as the senior pitcher struck out four in 8.0 innings and allowed just three runs to reach second and one to third. 
 
The Hounds added two runs in the top of the ninth, with Cody Smith scoring on a wild pitch and Matthew Holbrook singling home Jack Barry, making it 3-0. Ryan Cloutier came on for the bottom of the ninth and recorded three strikeouts to earn his fourth save of the year. 

GAME TWO – Assumption University 4, Southern Connecticut State University 2
Assumption scored in the top of the first for the second game in a row, as Smith drove in Owen Podolec with an RBI single. Barry doubled the Greyhounds' lead in the third, knocking in Chris Klein with a single. The Hounds tacked on a run in the sixth and one in the seventh to extend their lead to 4-0. 
 
In the bottom of the seventh, Southern Connecticut got on the board with a two-RBI single, but that was all they would get. 
 
Kyle Keating earned the win, striking out six in 6.0 innings and allowing just two hits. Keating only allowed one runner to reach second, which occurred in the third inning. Corey Chiappone picked up the save and struck out two in the bottom of the seventh.
