Baseball splits Monday doubleheader at New Haven

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The Assumption University baseball team pushed their winning-streak to four games following a 7-5 win in game one, but fell to the University of New Haven in game two, splitting the Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader Monday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME ONE – Assumption University 7, University of New Haven 5
Jack Barry got Assumption on the board in the top of the first inning, driving in Chris Klein with a single to right field. New Haven answered in the bottom of the frame, with a bases-loaded walk tying the game at 1-1. 
 
The Greyhounds struck again in the top of the third. Barry drove in Klein with a single to left field before scoring on a Matthew Holbrook base knock. The Chargers cut the deficit to one run with a solo home run by Matt McIntire in the bottom of the third. 
 
Assumption broke the game open in the top of the sixth, plated four runs. Jamison Howland singled home Holbrook before scoring on a single off the bat of Owen Podolec. Cody Smith joined the RBI party with a two-run double to right center. New Haven would slowly chip away at the deficit, as they plated one run in the sixth and two in the seventh, cutting the Assumption's lead to two runs (7-5). The Chargers would get a runner on third with just one out, but Evan McCarthy got a foul out, and a ground out to pick up the game-one win for the Hounds. 

GAME TWO – University of New Haven 9, Assumption University 2
New Haven raced out to an early lead, plating five runs in the bottom of the first inning. They extended their advantage to 7-0, following two runs in the third. 
 
Assumption got on the board in the top of the fifth inning, as Patrick McManus scored on an error by the Chargers' left fielder. Max LeFrancois came around to score later in the frame following a Cody Smith sacrifice fly. 
 
New Haven continued to add to their lead with one run in the fifth and one in the sixth.
