Smith walks off game one, but Baseball splits DH vs. Saint Michael's

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Assumption University baseball team used a walk-off home run off the bat of Cody Smith to win game one 9-8 before dropping game two against Saint Michael's College, as the two teams split the Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader at H.L. Rocheleau '24 Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME ONE – Assumption University 9, Saint Michael's College 8
Saint Michael's got on the board in the top of the first inning, as Evan Balian scored on a Max Kolifrath triple to left field. The Purple Knights doubled their lead in the second inning with a double to the left-center gap but scored on a throwing error by the left fielder. After a third-inning solo home run by the visitors, the Greyhounds got on the board with a triple to right field off the bat of Max LeFrancois, scoring Jamison Howland on the play. Assumption tied the game at 3-3 later in the frame, as LeFrancois scored on a fielding error by the second baseman before Cody Smith crossed on a double from Jack Barry.
 
In the bottom of the fourth, Sean Moynihan gave the Greyhounds their first lead with a two-run homer to left field. Saint Michael's responded in the top of the sixth, plating five runs to take an 8-5 lead. Matthew Holbrook answered right back for Assumption, hitting a solo home run to right field. Klein scored in the bottom of the seventh, closing the gap to one run, as he scored on an error by the Purple Knights' shortstop. 
 
The game would head to the bottom of the ninth inning with SMC leading 8-7, but after a one-out single by Klein, Cody Smith hit a no-doubt two-run home run to walk it off for the Greyhounds.
 
Cole Constantine earned the win as he retired the final eight batters of the game and had a pair of strikeouts.

GAME TWO – Saint Michael's College 7, Assumption University 4
The Purple Knights struck first, plating one run in the top of the second. Owen Podolec got Assumption on the board in the bottom of the second with his flair single over the shortstop. After Saint Michael's went back on top in the third, the Purple Knights extended their lead with back-to-back homeruns to lead off the fourth before pushing their lead to 5-1 with a run in the fifth. 
 
Assumption closed the gap in the eighth inning, as Jack Barry hit a solo home run before Holbrook tripled to right field, scoring Rabias on the play. Howland made it a one-run game with a suicide squeeze play, driving in Holbrook on the play. 
 
Saint Michael's added two runs in the top of the ninth to extend the lead to three runs, but the Greyhounds would not be able to mount a comeback and would fall 7-4 in game two.
