DOBBS FERRY, N.Y.– The Assumption University volleyball team fell in four sets to Mercy University in non-conference action Tuesday evening at the Victory Hall Sports Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
After a fast start by the Mavericks, they raced out to a 4-0 lead, but the Greyhounds responded with a 4-0 run. The two teams would exchange the following few points, but with Mercy leading 8-7, they slowly pulled away with a 17-9 run to capture the first set 25-15.
Once again, the hosts took an early 3-0 lead, but Assumption bounced back with a 5-2 run to tie the set at 5-5. The two teams traded the following few points, but with the score tied at 14-14, the Mavericks would have had a setting error, giving the Greyhounds their first lead of the match (15-14). Following a Mercy timeout, the Mavericks rattled off an 11-4 run to take the second set, 25-19.
The hosts opened the third set strong, holding their advantage to a five-point margin for the majority of the set. The Hounds would not go quietly, as with the Mavericks maintaining a 15-10 lead, Assumption began to chip away at the deficit slowly and would tie the set at 18-18. The teams were neck and neck down the stretch, but with the Greyhounds leading 25-24,
Carly Goodhue recorded a kill, giving Assumption a 26-24 third-set win.
In the fourth set, the Greyhounds had the early momentum, securing a three-point advantage (7-4). Mercy responded with a 7-1 run to force an Assumption timeout. The back-and-forth contest would continue as a 7-4 Hounds' run, led by three kills from
Alexis Distasio, tied the set at 15-15. The Mavericks would close out the match with a 10-3 run to earn a 3-1 win for the hosts.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Carly Goodhue led the Greyhounds with ten kills, while Alexis Distasio and Sophia Kane followed closely with eight and seven, respectively.
- Natalie Brojek paced the offense with 18 assists, with Marissa Billone adding 10.
- Defensively, Barbara Illig led the Hounds with 14 digs while adding a game-high five aces.
- Mercy leads the all-time series 9-6.
