Volleyball falls to STAC and Pitt.-Johnstown in Tri-Match on Friday

SPARKILL, N.Y. – The Assumption University women's volleyball team fell in two 3-0 sweeps during their St. Thomas Aquinas tri-match Friday afternoon. The Greyhounds first fell to STAC before falling to the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown.

HOW IT HAPPENED 
Match One – St. Thomas Aquinas College 3, Assumption University 0
In the opening set, the two teams traded the first few points, but with the score tied at 9-9, the Spartans went on a 6-1 run to go up 15-10. The Greyhounds would slowly cut away at the deficit, thanks to the efforts of Alexis Distasio, Kaitlyn Montgomery, and Carly Goodhue, who combined for seven of the 13 points. The late push would not work out, as Assumption would fall 25-23 to STAC in the first set. 
 
The Greyhounds established early momentum as they raced out to a 7-4 advantage. The hosting Spartans chipped away at the margin, eventually taking a 13-12 advantage. From that point on, STAC went on a 13-6 run to take the middle set 25-18. 
 
St. Thomas Aquinas opened up the third set with an early 5-2 advantage. The Hounds would battle back and tie the set at 11-11 thanks to a pair of kills by Carly Goodhue and Sophia Kane. STAC pulled away down the stretch, as they went on a 14-7 run to earn the sweep of the Blue and White following a 25-18 third set. 
 
Match 2: University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown 3, Assumption University 0
The first set was tightly contested from the opening serve, as neither team would maintain a significant lead. The Greyhounds took their first lead of the set at 14-13, following a ball-handling error by the opposition, and would hold the advantage until UPJ tied it up at 21-21. The Mountain Cats got four of the final six points to take the first set 25-23. 


The second set mirrored the first, as neither side could string together points. With the score tied 22-22, Lualis Alvardo had a pair of kills to power UPitt to a 25-23 set-two victory. The third set was all Mountain Cats, which led wire-to-wire and captured a 25-15 third set. 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Carly Goodhue and Alexis Distasio led the Greyhounds offensively, as they each recorded 17 kills, while Anna Dean added 11 and Kaitlyn Montgomery chipped in 10. 
  • Natalie Brojek paced the team with 28 assists, while Marissa Krawczyk tacked on 13 against Pitt. – Johnstown. 
  • Barbara Illig paved the way defensively with 35 digs, while Distasio led Assumption with six aces. 
  • The all-time series against STAC is now tied at 1-1, while Pitt has won both meetings against the Greyhounds.
