Women's Basketball comes up short at Saint Anselm, 70-61

MANCHESTER, N.H.—The Assumption University women's basketball team could not overcome a slow first half, as the Greyhounds fell to Saint Anselm College 70-61 in Northeast-10 Conference action Thursday evening. 

THE BASICS:

HOW IT HAPPENED: 
After Assumption raced out to a 7-4 early lead, powered by five points from Marina Callahan, Saint Anselm responded with a 16-4 run to take a 20-11 lead into the second quarter. The Hawks held the Greyhounds to just 1-of-7 from the field, while the hosts went 6-of-9 from the floor. 
 
After shooting just 26.7 percent (4-of-15) in the opening frame, Assumption shot a 43.8 clip 7-of-16) from the field in the second as they attempted to cut into the deficit. The Greyhounds got within five (22-17), as Callahan found Kaijhe Hall in the block for an easy layup at 5:13, but the Hawks would go on a 13-6 run, capped off by an Elise MacNair three-pointer to up 35-23 with 40 seconds remaining in the half. Molly Stokes would convert on a layup with under six seconds remaining, sending the two teams into the intermission with the hosts leading 35-25. 
 
In the second half, the Greyhounds attempted to claw their way back, but whatever they did, the Hawks answered. The closest Assumption would get was two points (57-55), as Callahan capped off a 10-2 run, where both Callahan and Grace Leary scored five points apiece. Saint Anselm would hit 9-of-12 free throws in the fourth quarter, as the late push by the Hounds would come up short, and Assumption would fall 70-61. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Marina Callahan led three Greyhounds in double figures, as she poured in 25 points, while Grace Leary (15) and Kaijhe Hall (11) added secondary scoring. 
  • Assumption outrebounded Saint Anselm 41-36, while the Hawks scored 34 points in the paint, compared to just 18 for the Hounds. 
  • Hall recorded her fourth double-double of the year, scoring 11 points while pulling down a game-high ten boards. 
  • Saint Anselm leads the all-time series 34-25.
