Women's Basketball drops second-straight NE10 Contest, falling at SCSU

NEW HAVEN, Conn.—The Assumption University women's basketball team dropped their second-straight Northeast-10 Conference matchup, as the Greyhounds fell to Southern Connecticut State University 70-55 on Sunday afternoon. 

THE BASICS:

HOW IT HAPPENED: 
In the first quarter, Southern Connecticut shot the lights out, connecting on 8-of-17 shots (47.1 percent), while Assumption shot 31.3 percent (5-of-16) from the field. The hosts took a 20-15 lead into the second quarter. The Owls saw their lead grow in the second quarter, as SCSU forced eight Assumption turnovers and connected on nearly 50 percent of their shots (46.7 percent) to expand their advantage to 13 (37-24) at halftime.
 
Assumption began the third quarter strong, as they were three of four from the field and cut their deficit down to just five points (39-34), following a layup by Olivia Found at 7:01, forcing a timeout by the Owls. That was the closest that the Greyhounds would get in the frame, as Southern bounced back and would enter the fourth up eight (48-40). The Hounds would attempt a comeback in the final frame, as they shot 46.2 percent (6-of-13), but the Owls would convert on 15-of-16 free throws to pull away for a 70-55 final. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Marina Callahan recorded her third double-double of the year as she stuffed the stat sheet with 11 points, 12 rebounds, and three blocks. Grace Leary was the other Greyhounds with double-digit points, as she recorded ten points. 
  • Assumption outrebounded Southern Connecticut 34-22, the Owls registered 36 points off 26 Greyhound turnovers, and the Hounds logged four points off 11 SCSU miscues. 
  • The Greyhounds still lead the all-time series 24-22.
