Volleyball splits tri-match with SNHU and Wilmington

WORCESTER, Mass.– The Assumption University volleyball team defeated Southern New Hampshire 3-0 in Northeast 10 Conference action, but would come up short against Wilimington University of Delaware, 3-1 in non-conference action, Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED 
Assumption University 3, Southern New Hampshire 0
Assumption started fast as they pulled away early in the opening set, as a 5-0 run brought a 9-7 lead to a 14-7 advantage. Southern New Hampshire would attempt to cut into the deficit, but it would be the Greyhounds who would go on to win the first set 25-20. In the second set, the Hounds raced out to a 14-5 advantage early. The Penmen would close the gap to four points (17-13), but Assumption answered with a 5-0 run of their own to go up 22-13. SNHU would grab a few points, but the hosts would hold on for a 25-18 second-set win. 
 
In the third set, the Blue and White jumped out to an early 4-1 lead, but SNHU responded with a 3-0 run. Assumption would continue to string points together and go out front 17-9. The Penmen would battle back, but it would be the Greyhounds that would complete the sweep following a 25-18 third-set win. 
 
Wilmington University 3, Assumption University 1
Assumption started strong, as they built an early 12-6 lead in the opening set. Wilmington battled back to get within two (16-14), but the Greyhounds picked up nine of the next 14 points to pull away for a 25-19 first set win. The second set was neck and neck throughout, but the hosts went on a 5-0 run to go up 19-14. Wilmington responded right away to capture 11 of the final 15 points to pull off a 25-23 win. 
 
The Wildcats opened up the third set on an 8-2 run, before extending their lead to 13-6. The Greyhounds would not go quietly, as they rattled off 8-of-9 points to tie the set at 14-14. The two teams would trade short runs, but Wilmington would come out on top, 25-22. The tightly contested match would continue into the fourth frame, as the visitors would maintain a slight edge early on, but the hosts would come back and tie it at 12-12. After the Hounds grabbed a 16-15 advantage, the Wildcats strung together five straight points to go up 20-16. The two teams would split the remainder of the points, but Wilmington would hold on to take the fourth set 25-22 and win the match. 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Madison Lupino led Assumption with 23 kills between the two matches, while Kaitlyn Montgomery and Grace Presswood recorded 19. Montgomery chipped in 9.0 total blocks, while Presswood had 43 digs. 
  • Marissa Krawczyk paced the Greyhounds' offense with 41 assists, while Marisa Billone had 35. 
  • Brennah Abilheria-Cargill had four of her six aces against Wilmington, while Krawczyk had six between the two matches. 
  • Southern New Hampshire still leads the all-time series 27-24, while this was the first-ever meeting between Assumption and Wilmington.
