SPARKILL, NY. —The Assumption University women's basketball team improved to 2-0 to begin the year, as the Greyhounds defeated St. Thomas Aquinas College 49-44 in non-conference action, Saturday afternoon. 

THE BASICS:
Scores: Assumption University 49, St. Thomas Aquinas College 44
Records: Greyhounds (2-0, 0-0 NE10), Spartans (0-2, 0-0 ECC)
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Assumption started strong, as Thai Davis opened the scoring with a 3-pointer on the first possession, but then the Greyhounds answered a layup by St. Thomas Aquinas with five straight points. The Spartans scored four points before the Hounds responded with a layup by Emily Collins and a buzzer-beater jumper by Davis, giving Assumption a 12-6 lead after the first quarter. 
 
After both teams struggled from the field in the first quarter, the scoring ramped up in the second, as Assumption shot 42.9 percent from the floor, while the hosts were 50.0 percent, but it was the Greyhounds who outscored the Spartans 18-13 in the frame, taking a 30-19 lead into halftime. 
 
Coming out of the intermission, STAC closed the gap and got within two points (34-32) following a three-pointer with 3:55 to go in the quarter, but Collins scored seven of the next nine points, sending the game to the fourth quarter, with the Blue and White maintaining a 41-34 lead. The hosts would once again get with one score at 45-43 with 1:48 left in regulation, but the Hounds would get a jumper from Collins and a pair of free throws by Teagan Curran to secure the 49-44 win. 
 
BY THE NUMBERS:

• Emily Collins had a game-high 21 points on 9-of-11 shooting, while adding six rebounds a nd one steal. 
• Teagan Curran, Maeve Moriarty, and Thai Davis all recorded seven points. 
• The two defenses were stifling, as Assumption shot 31.0 percent from the field, while St. Thomas Aquinas shot 31.5 percent. 
• The Greyhounds were 10-of-13 from the charity stripe, while the Spartans were 5-for-8.
• Assumption outrebounded St. Thomas Aquinas 41-39, while also outscoring them in the paint 24-18. 
• Assumption leads the all-time series 3-0.
