PHILADELPHIA, Pa. —The Assumption University women's basketball team needed overtime, as the Greyhounds pulled off the 58-54 upset of No. 20 Holy Family University in non-conference action, Saturday afternoon.
THE BASICS:
Scores: Assumption University 58, Holy Family University 54
Records: Greyhounds (3-0, 0-0 NE10), Tigers (3-1, 0-0 CACC)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Greyhounds shocked the Tigers in the opening quarter with a ten-point run.
Teagan Curran scored eight points in the first quarter to help the Hounds to a 12-10 lead. In the second quarter, the Tigers found their nationally-touted game and outscored Assumption 10-4. At halftime, Assumption trailed 20-16.
Four minutes into the third quarter, the Greyhounds seized momentum with a good three-pointer from
Madison Handrahan to cut the Holy Family lead to a single point.
Teagan Kamm and Curran combined for a chunk of scoring that gave the Blue and White a brief lead, but Holy Family wouldn't go away. The game was tied 33-33 heading into the final quarter, and it was back and forth from there. With 20 seconds left in regulation, Curran made a game-tying layup, which forced the game into overtime.
In OT, Curran made the first jumper, and Holy Family began to foul on every Greyhound attack, taking the free-throw gamble.
Maeve Moriarty was the target every time. She made five of six free throws in overtime to help lift the Hounds to a four-point victory.
