Football knocks off IUP, 23-20 in the NCAA First Round

INDIANA, PA. – The Assumption University football team scored 16 unanswered points to pull off the upset of Indiana University of Pennsylvania, 23-20, in the First Round of the 2025 NCAA Division II Football Tournament.

THE BASICS:
Score: Assumption University 23, Indiana University of Pennsylvania 20
Records: Greyhounds (9-2, 6-1 NE10) | Crimson Hawks (7-4, 6-1 PSAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED: 
Assumption was the first team to score, as Dom Santiago found Kameron Robbins for a 20-yard wheel route for a score to go up 7-0. IUP responded with a 2-yard rushing touchdown by Tavion Banks, before Parker Gregg crossed the goal line on a 1-yard run to go up 13-7 after 15 minutes. The Crimson Hawks added to their lead late in the second quarter, as Leon Parson scored from six yards out to go up 20-7. Massimo Sgambati capped off the first half, as he connected on a 29-yarder to send the game to overtime, with IUP leading 20-10. 
 
In the second half, Santiago scored on a two-yard quarterback plunge to get Assumption within three (20-17), before scoring with another QB keeper from one-yard out, giving the Greyhounds a 23-20 advantage. In the fourth quarter, the Greyhounds' defense was on lockdown, as they held the high-powered Crimson Hawks' offense to 59 yards and had two sacks to hold them off for a 23-20 win. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Dom Santiago led the way through the air, as he went 16-for-26 for 271 yards and one score, while adding 51 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. 
  • Kameron Robbins had 18 carries for 87 yards, while taking a 20-yard reception to the house. 
  • Will McNamara had a game-long 50-yard reception, while Connor Smith was the top target for Assumption, as he had five catches for 45 yards. 
  • Jhensen Touze led the Hounds' defense with 11 tackles, while Owen Fitzgerald and Jalen Smith-Philip had seven stops. Esteban Ortiz had four pass breakups. 
  • The Greyhounds outgained the Hawks 418-302. 
  • IUP won the first meeting between the two schools 27-22 in the 2017 National Quarterfinals.
