WESTFIELD, Mass.— Jonathan Surrette had four points, but the Assumption University men's ice hockey team fell to Westfield State University  5-4 in overtime to close out 2025, on Thursday evening at the Amelia Park Ice Arena

THE BASICS:
Score: Westfield State University 5, Assumption University 4 - OT
Records: Greyhounds (7-7-1, 4-2-1 NE10) | Owls (7-4-0, 4-1-0 MASCAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED: 
Westfield State was the first team to score, as they scored two goals in the opening 5:10 of the first period. Assumption responded on their first power play chance of the evening, as Jonathan Surrrette scored at 6:58 of the opening stanza. The Greyhounds would tie the game in the final minute of the stanza, as Shane McElhaney scored on the man-advantage. 
 
The Owls would once again open the period with a goal, as Xavier Tremblay put the hosts up 3-2 at 2:35. Assumption tied the game before the end of the middle period, as Patrick McKiernan struck with a wrist shot from the top of the left circle, evening the game at 3-3. Surrette struck again at 1:45 of the third period to give the Hounds their first lead of the game at 4-3. Westfield tied the game just past the midway mark of the period, as Liam Krypcznski scored off of a rebounded save. 
 
After neither team could score in the final ten minutes of regulation, the game would go to overtime, where the hosts would come out on top, with Julian Boisclair finding the game-winner. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

• Callum Welch recorded 36 saves between the crease for the Greyhounds. 
• Westfield outshot Assumption 41-33, while the Hounds won 40-of-76 faceoffs. 
• Assumption was 4-of-6 on the power play, while Westfield was 1-for-4. 
• Surrette's four points is the most by a Greyhound since Ronny Paragallo had four against MCLA on Jan. 5, 2025. 
• Shane McElhaney, Ryan Decker, and Leo Piandes all recorded two points. 
• This is the second straight game Assumption has had 4+ power-play goals, bringing their total to 8-of-14. 
• Westfield State still leads the all-time series 9-6-1.
