Phayre wins 500th, Women's Basketball tops SNHU, 80-67

WORCESTER, Mass. —Kerry Phayre picked up her 500th career win, as the Assumption University women's basketball team topped Southern New Hampshire University 80-67 in Northeast 10 Conference action, Saturday afternoon inside Andrew Laska Gymnasium.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
After the two teams traded buckets early on in the first quarter, which saw nine ties and nine lead changes, Southern New Hampshire saw their largest lead of the frame (22-17) with 2:21 to go in the opening 10 minutes. Assumption closed the gap at the end of the quarter, as Maeve Moriarty and Laura Johnson-Shedd hit three of four free throws to cut the deficit to 22-20. The Greyhounds answered with a 13-5 run to begin the second quarter, with Madison Handrahan hitting a pair of three-pointers, and Emily Collins adding five points. The Penmen continued to hang around as they outscored the Hounds 12-8 over the final 5:08 of the half, with the hosts leading 41-39 at the break. 
 
Coming out of the intermission, Assumption was firing on all cylinders, going on a 14-0 run that included shooting 4-of-5 from the field and forcing three turnovers to go up 55-39. Emma Dahl gave Assumption their largest lead of the afternoon of 19 points (61-42), with a jumper at 3:36 left in the third. After a three-pointer by Ava Winterburn, the Penmen closed the third quarter on an 11-6 run to cut the deficit to 11 points (61-50). The two teams both exchanged buckets in the early portion of the fourth quarter, but it was the combination of Teagan Curran and Thai Davis that extended Assumption's lead to 18 points (78-60) with 3:17 left in regulation. Southern New Hampshire closed out the game on a 7-2 run, but it would be Assumption that would come out on top with an 80-67 win. 

BY THE NUMBERS:
  • Teagan Curran had a game-high 20 points, while Maeve Moriarty (13) and Emily Collins (12) added double-digit points. 
  • Collins, Curran, and Maeve Moriarty combined for ten blocks, while Thai Davis had a game-high three steals. 
  • Assumption outrebounded Southern New Hampshire 43-36, while also outscoring the opposition 38-26 in the paint. 
  • With the win, Assumption University's head coach Kerry Phayre became the 16th active Division II Women's Basketball head coach to earn 500 career wins. 
  • Assumption leads the all-time series 32-21
