EAST MEADOW, N.Y.— The Assumption University men's ice hockey team scored late, but the Greyhounds would fall to Division I, Long Island University, 8-3 in non-conference action Friday afternoon.
THE BASICS:

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Long Island University started strong, as they scored at 1:49 of the first period, as Onni Leppänen was the first one to beat a netminder. The Sharks doubled their lead with a goal at 7:17, before pushing their lead to 3-0 with another goal at 10:43. LIU would cap off the first period with a goal at 18:57 to go up 4-0, while also outshooting Assumption 19-6 with
Callum Welch logging 15 saves in the frame.
After the Sharks opened the second period with their fifth goal of the game, the Greyhounds would get on the board at 11:18 of the middle stanza, as
Shane McElhaney scored on the power play, with
Brett Cunningham and
Jake Russell picking up the helpers on the goal. LIU answered before the end of the frame to go up 6-1 after 40 minutes.
The hosts would continue to add to their lead to begin the third period, scoring two goals, but Assumption would not go quietly, with
Dean Simeone and
Ryan Decker picking up goals late in the game, making the final score 8-3.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- LIU outshot Assumption 52-18, while also winning 34-of-53 faceoffs.
- Both sides scored on the power play, as the Greyhounds were 1-for-1 while the Sharks were 1-for-2.
