DANSBURY, Conn.— The Assumption University men's ice hockey team scored three goals in the final 1:13 of regulation to pull away for a 6-3 win at Western Connecticut State University, Saturday afternoon.
THE BASICS:
Score: Assumption University 6, Western Connecticut State University 3
Records: Greyhounds (7-6-1, 4-2-1 NE10) | Wolves (1-9-0, 0-5-0 LEC)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Jake Russell was the first to score, as he found the back of the cage at 3:46 of the first period. Western tied the game five minutes later, ending the first period tied at 1-1.
Leo Piandes regained the lead for the Greyhounds before
Brett Cunningham converted on the power play late in the second period.
In the third period, WCSU tied the game with two goals in the opening 13 minutes. With 1:13,
Jonathan Surrette gave the Hounds a 4-3 advantage, before
Leo Piandes and Dean Simone scored, making the final score 6-3.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Michael Salvatore picked up 39 saves in the win
- Assumption outshot Western Connecticut 54-42, but the Wolves won 49-of-84 faceoffs.
- Both scored on the power play, as the Greyhounds went 1-for-7, while West Conn was 1-for-8.
- Assumption now leads the all-time series 1-0-0.
