Women's Basketball upends Southern Connecticut, 63-52

WORCESTER, Mass.— The Assumption University women's basketball team used a big second half to pull away from Southern Connecticut State University 63-52 in Northeast-10 Conference action, Saturday afternoon inside Andrew Laska Gymnasium. 
 
THE BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED: 
The two teams were evenly matched in the first quarter, as they traded baskets. The Greyhounds spread the scoring around, as five different Greyhounds found the bottom of the twine, but Southern Connecticut State was led by Delanie Haines, who scored eight points. After 10 minutes, the team held a slight 14-12 lead. 
 
After the Owls scored the opening basket of the second quarter, the Greyhounds went on a 12-3 run throughout the frame, as Laura Johnson-Shedd paved the way with four points. The Hound defense held SCSU to 2-of-8 from the field, forcing six turnovers in the frame. 
 
Assumption came of the halftime break shooting the lights out, as they shot 80.0 percent (8-of-10) from the field with Molly Stokes leading the way with seven points. The Greyhounds defense continued to stifle the Southern Connecticut offense, holding them to 4-of-13 shooting in the third. 
 
The fourth quarter was merely academic, as the Hounds matched every basket that the Owls scored, as both sides scored 21 points apiece, making the final score 63-52. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Marina Callahan and Molly Stokes each scored 15 points to lead the way for the Greyhounds.
  • Callahan added five rebounds, four assists, and four steals, while Stokes had three steals, two assists, and one rebound. 
  • Both teams pulled down 31 rebounds, as Kaijhe Hall paced the Hounds with nine, while Maeve Moriarty added six. 
  • The hosts dominated the fast break points, outscoring the opposition 22-5, and had 20 assists on 22 baskets. 
  • Assumption still leads the all-time series 32-21
