Women's Basketball fends off Saint Michael's 49-43

WORCESTER, Mass.— The Assumption University women's basketball earned a hard-fought win over Saint Michael's College, 49-43, in Northeast-10 Conference action Wednesday evening inside Andrew Laska Gymnasium.

HOW IT HAPPENED: 
Assumption started hot, outscoring Saint Michael's 13-8 in the first quarter. They were led by Marina Callahan, who scored eight points in the opening quarter. Callahan continued her success in the second, with her 13 total first-half points helping the Hounds secure a 24-18 lead at halftime. Veteran Greyhound Molly Stokes dished three assists, including setups for Callahan in the paint, while adding six first-half points.
 
The Purple Knights surged in the third quarter. Brianna Furch went on a hot streak, hitting four three-pointers to lead the visitors, who outscored the Greyhounds 19-13 in that quarter. With the score tied at 37-37 as they entered the final quarter, Saint Mike's came out firing and scored the first two baskets. Assumption got back into the game thanks to a trio of layups by Teagan Kamm. Stokes scored the go-ahead driving layup, along with the free throw that followed, with 1:51 remaining. The Greyhounds made key free throws down the stretch to secure the win.


INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Marina Callahan led the Hounds in scoring with 15 points and collected 14 rebounds for another double-double.
  • Molly Stokes ended with 13 points, five rebounds, and a game-high four assists.
  • Assumption outrebounded Saint Michael's 44-37.
  • The lead changed a total of seven times tonight.
  • The Greyhounds lead the all-time series against the Purple Knights 43-13.
